Zionism substantively predates World War II. I understand why you would imply that Israel was a payback for the Jewish experience of that war, but it is a mistaken belief. A not-terrible overview is at wikipedia on the subject. The vast majority of the land in the state of Israel which was at one time in Muslim hands and is now in Jewish hands was bought and paid for. Arafat's PLO (later to become Fatah, et. al) was founded before the 1967 war (actually in 1964). The stated goal at the time was the extermination of the Jews and conquest of the land.Hamas just won a major election in the Palestinian areas, and Hamas is openly opposed to the concept of a Jewish state - (c.f. the concepts of dar el-Islam and dar el-harb).Hopefully God will bless all of the various leaders of all groups in the area with wisdom, and will inspire them toward peaceful living arrangements. Short of that type of intervention, I'm not so optimistic.

True enough in terms of Zionism - but that's not the point I was attempting to make (that this grew out of "whole cloth" from WWII.)The land grab did though, and that it displaced people who were previously there is beyond dispute. This pattern continued up until Sharon changed his mind on putting settlements on every square inch of what was supposed to be Palestinian land.....Yes, Hamas has said that it wants Israel to cease to exist. However, what's never reported - at least not in the mainstream media - is that huge numbers of Israelis have every desire to eliminate the Palestinians! This is hardly a one-sided problem; the settlers, almost to an individual, believe that all the land there was given to the Jews by God.One can hope that cooler heads prevail. This much is certain - Hamas has been democratically elected in the Palestinian territories. How this will play out over the next couple of years will certainly be interesting. One part of this that is troubling to me personally is that our government has said they will not recognize or deal with Hamas. You may disagree with a political organization, but the fact remains that they were democratically elected. If you respect democratic elections you must respect their result - even when its not what you want to have happen......
