Of course the talking heads are all out today screaming about the need for "
more gun control damnit!"
Let me point out just a few things, while the nation is still mourning for those who were killed at Virginia Tech yesterday by someone who was, clearly, a madman.
- "Must carry" laws have been passed in many states. We now have 20 years worth of history on that account - the right to carry concealed weapons in public by law-abiding citizens. In each and every case where "must issue" has passed, both violent and property crime rates have fallen. Every time.
- We have a nearly-100-year history of attempting to prevent illegal drugs from entering this nation. We have failed; we interdict less than 10% of all the drugs that are shipped unlawfully into this country. What makes anyone think we could stop firearms - which can be shipped as pieces, do not have an odor and thus render dogs useless, and are both smaller and more easily concealed - from being imported when we cannot stop drugs?
- It is indisputable that a person who is bent on committing murder does not care if he or she violates a firearm law. Murder is either a capital or life-in-prison offense in the United States, depending on the jurisdiction. You can only imprison someone for life or execute them once. As such, attempting to pass yet more firearms laws will only prevent law-abiding citizens - who follow the law - from having firearms.
Now, in all "Must Issue" states I'm aware of, educational facilities are a defined "prohibited place" where carrying concealed is not allowed (other examples include government buildings such as courthouses and bars.)
But let's think - this nutball had time to shoot how many people? And not just in one blaze either - he got two cracks at the apple!
If it had been legal to carry concealed at V-Tech I'm willing to bet that within the first two rounds going off from his weapon someone would have added ventilation holes to his chest, and the incident would have been over.
Net loss attributable to "Gun Control Liberal Politics" - thirty one lives.
